2.2 Creating Android Virtual Device(AVD)

Android Virtual Device(AVD)

An Android Virtual Device (AVD) is a configuration that defines the characteristics of an Android phone, tablet, Wear OS, Android TV, or Automotive OS device that you want to simulate in the Android Emulator.

The AVD Manager is an interface you can launch from Android Studio that helps you create and manage AVDs.

Each instance of the Android Emulator uses an Android virtual device (AVD) to specify the Android version and hardware characteristics of the simulated device. To effectively test your app, you should create an AVD that models each device on which your app is designed to run.

To create a new AVD, perform following steps:

  1. To open the AVD Manager, do one of the following:
    • Select Tools > AVD Manager.
    • Click AVD Manager AVD Manager icon in the toolbar.
Your Virtual Devices
  1. Click Create Virtual Device, at the bottom of the AVD Manager dialog.
    The Select Hardware page appears.

Notice that only some hardware profiles are indicated to include Play Store. This indicates that these profiles are fully CTS(Compatibility Test Suite) compliant and may use system images that include the Play Store app.

  1. Select a hardware profile, and then click Next.
  2. The System Image page appears.
  1. Select the system image for a particular API level, and then click Next.
  2. The Verify Configuration page appears.
  1. Change AVD properties as needed, and then click Finish
